RE: first trip out - what was on your "bring next time" list?

Our 5er is always ready to go. Depending where we are heading we just add or remove items.
Next week we are heading for the Eastern Sierras for some serious fly fishing and then on to Mother Lode country for prospecting and more fishing.
So we changed out the salt water tackle from from last week to fly rods and light tackle and added metal detector and other prospecting equipment.

RE: Boondocking near Bishop Calif?

When you get down to Lone Pine check out Alabama Hills. I didn't know when we where up there in July that Alabama Hills is BLM. Also the DWP has a small campground (county) in Independence and one in Lone Pine.
No hook-ups but very inexpensive. And one more just south of Lone Pine, Diaz Lake also county about $5 or 6 a night.

RE: 1st rv- dumb ? but what is the button by the brake?

O.K. we my as well keep going on this thread. My friend had a Spitfire that had a dip stick in the midlle of the carburator. He had to check it just about every day or blow the engine if it ran dry.
I had an 1970 Opel GT,looked like a mini Corvette, 4 speed shift with overdrive pull knob.

RE: 1st rv- dumb ? but what is the button by the brake?

I learned to drive in a 1948 Buick Special.. with a gun holster next to the emergency brake and a hand controled spot light next to the rear view mirror (the car was three years older then I)

How about the manual choke and the knob on the dash for turning on wipers?

RE: Involuntary fulltiming surges, limit RV parking.

In our area, THE DESERT 15 minutes outside of Palm Springs, we have quite a few RV parks. In the past they would sit empty during the HOT!! summer months, NOT THIS YEAR. They area 50 to 70% full.
Palm Springs has a large homeless population with many living in city parks and shacks in the desert.
Up here in Sky Valley we have some acerage and our 5er is ready at all times in front of the house.
We are only half a mile from the San Andreas Fault so if the BIG ONE comes we are ready.

RE: Witnessed Substantial decrease in travel?

Othertonka: I suspect a lot of the rental RVs are tourists from Europe - I have met a few that fly here and rent and RV so they can travel and "save" on hotels.
Also, now, coming to America is "cheep" for them and their Euro. Gas? Half the price of Europe. They LOVE it!
Come to think about it there were a lot of foreign languages being spoken all over the campground from people in those rental units. There was even one large red RV, Foreign made, larger than a prevost, I have seen one just like it a couple years ago in the midwest, that pulled into the campground. It has bus like seats for about 18 people up front and the back end has cubbie hole bunk like sleeping compartments behind a fold down porch and a canvas where they sleep. The kitchen came out on the side and the German driver also did the cooking for everyone. They were all foreign people and haveing a great time. So maybe it is cheaper here for them, and at least they got to see our beautiful Yosemite park.
Thanks for pointing that out to me.
We have seen that same red bus full of Germans thru out the southwest for the past 10 years.

You might be ... if DW has at all times two shopping lists... one for the 5er and one for the house.

RE: You MIGHT be an RV'r if . . .

The Fireball -
OK, now that's some funny stuff right there, and the one about "having a beer for breakfast" took me back to my younger days. I don't think I could've been considered an RVer back then, unless the back seat of a Chevy Vega counts as an RV.
Anyway, back in the day, one could qualify with some of these:
. . . After running out of firewood, you burn the wooden picnic table from another campsite.
. . . You've ever iced down a canoe of beer.
. . . You are familiar with this formula: 1 case / person / day.
. . . After melting one tennis shoe in the campfire, you've fashioned a boot out of duct tape and a 12-pack box.
. . . You address the retiree in the next campsite as "Dude" all weekend.
. . . When the weekend ends, your camp chair again becomes a part of your living room furniture.
. . . You own 4 coolers and 1 suitcase.
OMG...brings back memories.....lol
Add Guitar and one frying pan... 1960's memories.
